Well I'm pretty excited about my internship in Phoenix. I'll be working for the Maricopa County Flood Control District, which is responsible for issuing development permits in County lands that are in the floodplain.
Floods- in Arizona- you ask? Well, yes. Flash floods during the rainy season can cause horrific floods Phoenix.
Some of the things I'm likely to be working on are permit review and GIS. I've been told that all my work will be inside so I won't have to be out in the heat. Though I will be inside, I plan to hike around. I brought my binoculars. May need to invest in some cowboy boots to ward off rattlers.
I'm hoping to learn the ins and outs of the floodplain planning and permitting process and to get a feel for how they use GIS. If you want more info about their office, visit: http://www.fcd.maricopa.gov/
I'm also looking forward to seeing some family in Phoenix and doing other fun stuff. My housing situation is also super interesting. I'll be staying with a guy I met on couchsurfing.org who builds houses out of 3-d printed materials. As part of agreeing to let me stay there I have to put in a day per week working on 3-d house models and putting them together. Wow- I could not have asked for a more interesting trip!
